Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force has dismissed social media rumors suggesting that a murder had occurred in Old Jeshwang, clarifying that the incident in question was an assault case resulting in actual bodily harm.

A viral video circulating online in the early hours of Tuesday, August 5, showed an elderly man being escorted by a group of individuals, prompting widespread speculation that he was involved in a murder. However, police say the claims are “misleading.”

According to an official statement from the force, the incident occurred on Monday, August 4, and was reported at the Old Jeshwang Police Station.

The victim, identified as Samba Jallow of Old Jeshwang, sustained injuries from a knife attack and is currently receiving treatment at the Kanifing General Hospital.

The suspect, 50-year-old marabout Saidou Trawally, also a resident of Old Jeshwang, is in police custody and cooperating with investigators.

“The public is strongly advised to refrain from spreading unverified information that could incite panic or obstruct investigations,” the statement said.

Police urged anyone with information that could aid the ongoing investigation to come forward as efforts continue to ensure justice is served.
