Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has dismissed claims that it abandoned Officer Ancy Jawo, the sole survivor of the deadly Sukuta-Jabang traffic lights shooting, as reported by the Foroyaa newspaper on July 29, 2025.
The police rebuttal comes in response to a story titled “Policewoman Battles Pain After Sukuta-Jabang Traffic Lights Shooting” by journalist Louise Jobe, which suggested that Officer Jawo was left to cope alone with the long-term effects of the ambush. Two officers died in that incident.
In a press statement, the GPF said the article was “misleading” and failed to accurately reflect the institutional support provided to Officer Jawo. The police emphasized that from the onset of the attack, the leadership of the Force had been fully involved in ensuring her medical, psychological, and emotional care.
According to the statement, Officer Jawo received treatment at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul and was discharged after a full clinical assessment.
The GPF said there has been no recommendation—either written or verbal—from EFSTH or any other medical authority suggesting she requires overseas treatment. Additionally, the police indicated that no such request had come from her family.
The Force detailed ongoing support provided to Jawo, including financial assistance for medications, routine psychological counselling, and regular visits from police leadership. The statement added that support had also been extended to the families of the two slain officers.
In a gesture of recognition, Officer Jawo was promoted from First Class Constable to Sergeant—an exceptional advancement ahead of her peers—citing her courage during the fatal ambush.
The police acknowledged that trauma recovery is a gradual process and reiterated their readiness to offer further support should any legitimate medical recommendation arise. The GPF also called on the media to ensure factual reporting, especially on sensitive matters that affect public confidence in national institutions.
“The Gambia Police Force remains committed to supporting Officer Ancy Jawo and all personnel who serve with courage and dignity,” the statement concluded.
