Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The police have extended the bail of United Democratic Party’s (UDP) Deputy National Organizing Secretary, Ebrima Dibba, while awaiting legal advice from the Attorney General’s Chambers. Dibba was arrested upon his arrival at Banjul International Airport for comments made in a WhatsApp audio and taken to the airport police station for questioning.
Upon reporting to the prosecution office this morning, Dibba, who anticipated being arraigned, was instead informed that his bail had been extended, allowing him to return home. He was accompanied by his legal team, including Counsels Lamin L.S Camara, Abdoulie Fatty, Bensouda L.S Camara, Borry S. Touray, and Ya Kumba Jaiteh.
The police had released both Ebrima Dibba and Bakary Sillah of Mandinary on bail as of Sunday, June 2, 2024. They were initially detained on charges of uttering seditious words against the President, a violation of Section 52(1)(b) of the Criminal Code, Cap 10, Volume 3, Laws of The Gambia.
The police communications department confirmed that there is ongoing further investigations into the matter. Both men have denied any wrongdoing and are cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
The release on bail follows public outcry and calls for transparency in the handling of the case. As the investigation continues, Dibba and Sillah are required to regularly report to the authorities while on bail.
