Gambiaj.com – (BARRA, The Gambia) – Police in The Gambia has significantly ramped up its security and surveillance operations in the North Bank Region (NBR) following a surge in irregular migration attempts, with the Barra–Ginack corridor being identified as an increasingly vulnerable hotspot.
This intensified effort is part of a nationwide strategy aimed at disrupting facilitation networks and deterring young people from embarking on risky and unlawful migration routes.
Surveillance Uncovers Attempted Crossing
The decisive action comes after a recent surveillance patrol near a crossing point around Ginack successfully intercepted a group of youths preparing for an illegal departure.
According to a police notice, the youths were preparing to cross using a local boat. This illegal transit was being facilitated by motorbike operators who transported them from the Barra end to the crossing site.
In direct response to this discovery, the GPF immediately ordered a substantial joint deployment to reinforce the area. This operation includes officers from Immigration, Police Intervention Unit (PIU) backup, Traffic, and supporting sister security services, ensuring a comprehensive security presence.
Zero-Tolerance Enforcement Strategy
Officers on the ground have been directed to enforce a strict zero-tolerance approach to disrupt the illegal crossings and the facilitation networks supporting them. Enforcement measures are immediate and firm: officers will carry out targeted screening of individuals in the corridor, impound motorbikes found to be facilitating unlawful crossings, and seize the boat involved in the intercepted attempt.
Furthermore, the GPF has directed sustained patrols across the Barra–Ginack axis, recognizing that this corridor continues to emerge as a critical area for irregular migration attempts, necessitating a firm and continuous presence. The overall strategy is to limit access to illegal departure points and protect young people from the dangers associated with these routes.
The Gambia Police Force concluded its notice by urging local communities to play an active role in the ongoing operations.
The public is strongly encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement and promptly report any suspicious activities observed around the crossing points. The GPF reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to securing national borders through “coordinated, proactive, and intelligence-led policing.”
