The police have provided information regarding the gruesome discovery of a body’s remains close to a Sukuta cemetery. On Monday, March 18, 2024, the police say that investigators and Ministry of Health staff went to a Sukuta cemetery in response to information they received about human remains discovered adjacent to a cemetery.

The mosque committee’s elders and medical professionals assisted in the investigations. According to preliminary inquiries, the aforementioned remains belonged to a body that the Sukuta Mosque Committee had interred months prior.

A few unverified allegations circulated on social media in The Gambia earlier on Monday, claiming that unidentified people had broken into the Sukuta cemetery, removed the bodies of a father and son, and then vanished, taking their heads with them.

There was only one body discovered, according to police reports, and even though it was decayed, there were no signs of missing body parts. Though separated from the body, the head was discovered at the location.

The people who dug up the body and took the head off have not yet been identified by the authorities or taken into custody. The community is shocked by the grave’s destruction, and the reason for this horrific deed is yet unknown.

In an effort to guarantee that justice is done for the deceased and their bereaved family, the Sukuta Mosque Committee has expressed its displeasure and is collaborating closely with the authorities. Many people are now doubting the security and sanctity of the final resting places of their loved ones due to this unfortunate and unsettling circumstance.

In light of this horrific discovery, the police have requested that the public maintain their composure, exercise caution, and report any suspicious behavior they see or hear.
