Gambiaj.com – (Farafenni, The Gambia) – Farafenni Police have launched an investigation into the suspected murder of a 44-year-old local security guard, Sheriffo Manneh, whose lifeless body was discovered along the Farafenni–Bereto Highway on Tuesday morning.
According to police, a distress call led officers to the scene where Manneh was found lying on the ground with multiple visible injuries. He was pronounced dead, and his body was evacuated to the Farafenni General Hospital before being referred to Banjul for a postmortem examination.
The deceased was later identified by his wife and mother. They told investigators that Manneh had left home around 8:00 PM on Monday, June 23, riding a recently acquired Supremo motorcycle for an undisclosed errand. He never returned.
Reports from Bereto village suggest that Sheriffo had been hired that evening for a ride to the border, a common form of transport locally known as “Jakarta.” His family became increasingly concerned after losing contact with him.
Early Tuesday morning, women from Bereto discovered a dead body near the highway and alerted authorities. It was confirmed to be Manneh. His motorcycle and mobile phones were reportedly missing from the scene.
Community members describe the late Sheriffo Manneh as a hardworking man who juggled multiple jobs to support his wife, three children, and extended family.
In addition to his night shifts as a security guard, he used to collect and sell firewood with a donkey cart. Just before the Muslim feast of Tobaski, his brother in Italy had sent him money to purchase the motorbike to start work as a taxi rider.
As of Wednesday, police had not identified any suspects, and no arrests had been made. Authorities are urging members of the public to come forward with any information that could help with the investigation.
