Gambiaj.com – (Farafenni, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force has opened an investigation into a devastating fire that completely destroyed the Farafenni Courthouse in the North Bank Region early Tuesday morning.
According to a police statement, officers from the Farafenni Police Station responded swiftly to reports of the blaze, which broke out in the early hours of the day.
Despite joint efforts by police officers, community members, and firefighters, the inferno consumed the entire courthouse along with all materials and case files inside.
The Gambia Fire and Rescue Services were called to the scene to assist in controlling the fire, but the structure was already engulfed by the time they arrived. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries were recorded.
Police say they are now working closely with fire investigators and other relevant agencies to determine the cause of the incident.
“The Gambia Police Force is collaborating with the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services to investigate the cause of the fire and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement noted.
The destruction of the courthouse has raised concerns about the potential loss of judicial records and the impact on ongoing cases in the region.
Investigators have not ruled out any possibilities, including electrical faults or foul play, pending the outcome of the forensic assessment.
The police have assured the public that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
