Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force has announced the initiation of an investigation into concerns raised in a recent special audit report by the Auditor General regarding the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). This audit report, which flagged certain unspecified issues within the IEC’s operations, has now drawn formal scrutiny from law enforcement.
While police officials refrained from disclosing details about the specific matters under review, they assured the public that the investigation will be handled with utmost professionalism and integrity.
The police further pledged to keep the public informed of any significant findings as the investigation progresses.
This surprising move may underscores a commitment to transparency and accountability in the oversight of electoral bodies in The Gambia, especially as the nation looks to safeguard trust in its democratic institutions.
The IEC, responsible for organizing elections and ensuring fairness in electoral processes, has yet to comment on the audit findings or the investigation.
The announcement of this police inquest is likely to intensify concerns about the transparency and integrity of the IEC’s decision-making process. This comes amid opposition suspicions over the organization’s handling of recent national elections and the contentious debate surrounding the age of its chairman, Alieu Momar Njie.
Additionally, the IEC remains silent on the issue of registering Gambians living abroad to enable their participation in domestic elections.
As the police proceed with their inquiries, stakeholders and the public will be closely monitoring the investigation’s outcomes and any implications it may have on the administration of elections in The Gambia.
