Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Police investigators have recorded a major breakthrough in the ongoing probe into the vandalism and theft of Gamtel infrastructure, particularly copper wires critical to the country’s telecommunications network.
According to the police, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Momod Wurry Jallow, identified as one of the alleged receivers of the stolen materials, voluntarily cooperated with investigators and led them to his residence.
A search of the premises led to the discovery and recovery of a quantity of copper wires believed to have been stolen from Gamtel installations.
The recovered materials have been secured as key evidence as investigators work to unravel the wider network involved in the theft and sale of essential national infrastructure.
The Senegambia Police on Monday, July 7, 2025, arrested a suspect for allegedly cutting and burning Gamtel cables near the OIC Conference Center, an act that poses a serious national security threat capable of interrupting (blacking out) the country’s entire communications network infrastructure.
Acting on a tip-off, PIU officers found two men vandalizing the cables. One suspect, Alhagie Secka, fled the scene and remains at large, while the other, Manjohn Silver, was arrested after attempting to escape.
The GPF strongly warns that any individuals involved in stealing, selling, or buying equipment or cables belonging to Gamtel or any other public utility will face the full force of the law.
These actions are not only criminal but also have grave national security implications, the police say. They also assured the public that further updates would be shared as the investigation progresses.
