Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has announced a major breakthrough in its efforts to combat financial crime, following the arrest of a Nigerian national and the recovery of large sums of suspected counterfeit foreign currency.
According to police sources, officers from the Bakau Police Station acted on intelligence and apprehended Alpha Jallow, also known by his Muslim name, whose identity had recently changed. During a search of his residence, investigators uncovered $23,100 in suspected fake US dollars and 57.5 million CFA francs believed to be counterfeit.
The seized currencies have been secured and are currently undergoing forensic examination to determine their origin and authenticity. Jallow has been formally charged and remains in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities are probing deeper into the potential network behind the counterfeit operation.
The GPF has lauded the role of the public, particularly members of the business community, in alerting authorities to suspicious activities. “We commend the vigilance and cooperation of the public, whose efforts were vital in exposing this criminal activity,” a police spokesperson stated.
In a statement issued today, the police urged citizens to remain alert and report any suspicious financial transactions. “Early intervention is key to disrupting financial crimes and safeguarding the national economy,” the statement read.
The GPF reaffirmed its commitment to proactive enforcement and community-centered policing as part of broader efforts to combat financial crime and maintain economic security.
