Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, the Gambia)- A post-mortem examination was conducted today on the body of 27-year-old Omar Badjie at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) to determine the cause of his death, which has drawn different accounts from his family, eyewitnesses, and the police.

The procedure was carried out by Dr. Leigh, with Dr. Daffeh representing the family. Family members were present, along with the family’s lawyer, Ayub Johnny Njie of AJ Njie & Associates Law Chambers.

According to the family and eyewitnesses, Badjie was apprehended and allegedly beaten by security officers after being caught with a cannabis “weed smoking joint.” The police, however, say he died after falling during a “hot pursuit” and was later pronounced dead.

The post-mortem began with the formal identification of the body. Two family members positively identified Omar Badjie before the examination started.

Family representatives Tumane Badjie (uncle) and Sarjo Jarju, along with Counsel Njie and Dr. Daffeh, were present. Police officers in attendance included Sub Inspector Babucarr Touray, Inspector Sainabou Manjang, Cpl Edrisa Jarju, ASP Malang Jarju, and Cpl Babou Mbye.

Some parts of the body were kept for further analysis, including toxicology and microscopic tests, which could provide evidence of trauma, pre-existing conditions, or substances in the body.

The family was told a formal report would be prepared and shared with them. The body was released but kept at the hospital overnight.

The police and family now waits for the official post-mortem report to clarify the circumstances of Omar Badjie’s death.
