President Adama Barrow recently met with US Ambassador at Large on Global Criminal Justice, Ms. Beth Van Schaack, marking their second meeting within two years. The focus of their discussion was the progress of The Gambia’s Transitional Justice Programme, specifically regarding accountability for human rights violations and reconciliation efforts.
During the meeting, President Barrow and Ambassador Van Schaack reviewed the steps taken to ensure accountability for human rights violations committed during the previous regime. They also discussed the implementation of key reforms aimed at promoting reconciliation and healing in the country. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the progress made and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding justice and human rights in The Gambia.
President Barrow reiterated his government’s commitment to supporting the implementation of the TRRC Report and expressed readiness to work with partners to realize its recommendations. He emphasized the importance of accountability and ensuring that those responsible for human rights violations are held accountable for their actions. President Barrow stressed the need for all parties to work together to achieve true reconciliation and healing for the people of The Gambia. He affirmed his government’s dedication to working with partners to ensure the full implementation of the TRRC recommendations.
Ambassador Van Schaack expressed satisfaction with the progress made since her last visit to The Gambia and pledged the United States’ continued support for the Transitional Justice Programme. She commended President Barrow for his commitment to upholding human rights and promoting justice in the country. Ambassador Van Schaack emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for human rights violations accountable and ensuring that victims receive the justice and closure they deserve. She reiterated the United States’ commitment to working alongside The Gambia to achieve lasting peace and reconciliation.
The meeting was attended by the United States Ambassador to The Gambia, H.E. Sharon Cromer, and The Gambia’s Justice Minister, Dawda Jallow, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the two countries to promote justice and human rights in The Gambia.
