Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, the Gambia)- The 54th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Africa Region Conference has officially opened in The Gambia, with President Adama Barrow urging African leaders to take decisive action in strengthening democratic governance, addressing conflicts, and building resilience against economic and climate shocks. This high-profile gathering, which is being hosted by The Gambia for the first time in history, has brought together speakers of parliament, legislators, diplomats, and civil society leaders from countries across the continent. President Barrow highlighted the importance of accountability, resilience, and tangible results for the people, warning that democracy cannot thrive without these crucial elements.

“We inhabit a continent of ample potential to develop rapidly, yet too often, our progress is stalled by instability, poverty, and uneven development,” Barrow told delegates. “The salvation of Africa lies in democratic governance, proper policies, and appropriate action, sustained by peace, stability, and security for all.”
The Gambian leader highlighted the persistence of conflicts, the resurgence of unconstitutional governments, and the disproportionate impact of climate change on Africa’s most vulnerable communities. He warned that global economic shocks, from rising debt burdens to inflation, threaten to reverse hard-won development gains if leaders fail to act collectively.
In a pointed appeal to parliamentarians, Barrow stressed their role as “the voice of the people”, tasked with holding executives accountable, enacting progressive laws, and ensuring public resources are managed prudently. He urged them to use the conference as a platform to “compare notes, forge stronger partnerships, and commit to concrete actions.”
With the theme “Strengthening Democratic Governance and Resilience in Africa: Tackling Conflicts, Economic Shocks, and Climate Risks”, the week-long event positions The Gambia not only as a host but also as a driver of conversations that cut to the core of Africa’s political and developmental future.
According to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, the Africa Region Conference serves as a critical platform for member countries to share best practices, confront shared challenges, and develop strategies to reinforce democratic values across the continent.
