Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – In a move that has sent ripples through Gambian politics this evening, Hon. Omar Jammeh, Independent Member of Parliament for Janjanbureh Constituency, has officially joined President Adama Barrow’s ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
Hon. Jammeh met with President Barrow at State House this afternoon before addressing the media to announce his new political affiliation.
Speaking outside the presidential residence, he described the meeting as “very positive,” noting that it focused on community development, local concerns, and engagement with his constituents, including university students under his mentorship.
Asked about his reasons for joining the NPP, Hon. Jammeh said, “Joining or affiliating myself is not just about myself. This is to help in pushing the development of this community…this is really a welcoming development in terms of seeing myself affiliated to the party and also listening to those that put me into office.”
Political analysts see Hon. Jammeh’s defection as a significant win for President Barrow and the NPP. His presence strengthens the party’s representation in Janjanbureh and across the Central River Region, bringing youthful energy and parliamentary support to Barrow’s camp as the country gears up for the elections.
With this high-profile addition, the NPP consolidates its influence in key constituencies, signaling growing momentum for the ruling party as it prepares to contest the upcoming polls.
