President Barrow meet the People Tour

Gambiaj.com – (North Bank Region, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow has pledged major improvements in agricultural support and rural road infrastructure during his first general meeting of the nationwide tour held at Maka Balla Manneh in the North Bank Region (NBR).

Community representatives used the platform to appeal for the construction of reliable feeder roads to link remote villages with markets, health centers, and schools. They stressed that poor road networks continue to hinder economic activity and access to essential services.

Responding, President Barrow assured residents of Maka Balla Manneh, as well as communities across the Nuimi and Jokadou districts, that road development in NBR remains a priority for his administration.

The development of the North Bank Region is part of our government’s focus, and we will continue to improve the road network to ease movement and support livelihoods,” the President told the gathering.

On agriculture, the President highlighted measures taken to ease the burden of farming costs. He noted that the government subsidized fertilizer by D1,850, lowering the price from D2,950 to D1,100 to support farmers during the current cropping season.

Additionally, 1,143 metric tons of fertiliser were distributed free of charge, alongside 237 metric tons of certified rice seeds and 184 metric tons of certified maize seeds, all provided at no cost to farmers.

Addressing concerns over the new digital post-harvest payment system, President Barrow explained that the initiative stems from a new regulatory framework aimed at ensuring transparency and minimizing financial mismanagement. He assured farmers that the upcoming trade season will provide “multiple choices and timely payment.”

The President also highlighted government support for women’s economic empowerment in the region, noting that D2.8 million has been disbursed through the Women Enterprise Fund since 2021, benefiting 2,025 women in the North Bank Region.

He added that his administration established the Ministry of Gender to further champion women’s development, promising continued support and expansion of community gardens to strengthen household incomes.

President Barrow reaffirmed his commitment to improving living standards nationwide, saying his government “remains dedicated to uplifting lives and livelihoods across the country.
