Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow has emphasized the critical role of security forces in ensuring the safety of border communities while calling for accountability in their operations. Addressing a General Meeting in Lamoi, Kantora District in the Upper River Region, the President outlined measures to curb misconduct and promote ethical behavior among security personnel.
Highlighting concerns about bribery at checkpoints, President Barrow advised drivers to carry all necessary documents to avoid situations that could lead to soliciting bribes. He further warned traffic officers against extorting money from motorists, describing such practices as unacceptable.
The President also revealed alarming cases of individuals impersonating security personnel in border villages to extort money from drivers. He assured the public that his government would take decisive action against those found guilty of such acts, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to peace and stability across the country.
In addition to addressing security issues, President Barrow presented a cheque worth over 4 million Dalasi to 13 beneficiaries under the GIRAV (Gambia Inclusive and Resilient Agricultural Value Chain Development) project.
The recipients, involved in poultry and vegetable farming, were commended for their contributions to the agricultural sector, which remains vital to the country’s economy.
In a separate engagement, the President presented an additional cheque of 2 million Dalasi to six individuals for gardening and poultry production, encouraging them to explore agriculture as a sustainable income-generating venture.
He further highlighted a new initiative by the Ministry of Gender, which is offering loans with a 5% interest rate to women’s groups, aiming to empower women economically and foster inclusive growth.
President Barrow’s address reflected his administration’s dual commitment to eradicating corruption and promoting agricultural development as essential pillars for national progress.
