In a national address on the eve of Senegal’s 64th Independence Day celebration, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced strong measures to combat corruption. He emphasized relentless efforts against corruption, stating that penalties for tax fraud and illicit financial flows would be significantly tougher.
The protection of whistleblowers will also be strengthened. President Faye further announced an “amnesty for front men” with the condition of self-denunciation, aiming to root out corruption at all levels.
In the fight against corruption, reports from the Inspectorate General of State Administration (IGE), the Court of Auditors, and the National Anti-Corruption Office (OFNAC) will be made public. Additionally, President Faye highlighted the importance of responsibly exploiting the country’s natural resources, which belong to the people according to the Constitution.
The President expressed concern about the cost of living and pledged strong measures to address it. He emphasized the need to combat high living costs, stating, “The Senegalese are brave but they are tired and expect solutions from us.” He promised consultations with stakeholders to take strong actions in this regard.
President Faye also addressed the issue of youth employment, identifying it as a major concern. He pledged to prioritize public policies in education, career training, employment, and entrepreneurship for young people and women. He emphasized the importance of revisiting existing mechanisms to better meet the demands of the current labor market.
Regarding national unity, President Faye affirmed his commitment to preserving Senegalese living together. He highlighted the sacrifices of past heroes in defending freedom and values, pledging to continue their quest for the Senegal of their dreams.
In a call for African unity, President Faye reassured friendly and partner countries that Senegal remains open and welcoming to all. He emphasized the importance of good neighborly relations and solidarity within regional community organizations, citing Senegal’s commitment to African integration and the African Continental Free Trade Area.
President Faye concluded by emphasizing Senegal’s commitment to more just and inclusive global governance, calling for mutual respect between Senegal and its foreign partners. He pledged to uphold the values of cultures and civilizations while advocating for fairer global governance.
