Gambiaj.com – (BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau) – The President of the Republic, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, addressed the newly appointed members of his government today, delivering a stern reminder that their roles are not avenues for personal enrichment. Following a fresh split in the MADEM15, the alliance that propelled him to power, the leader of Guinea-Bissau reorganized the cabinet a week ago to reflect the new dynamics within the ruling coalition.
In a speech emphasizing the importance of integrity and dedication to the state, President Embaló cautioned the new officials against viewing their positions as opportunities for financial gain, urging them to be content with their official salaries.
“I can even be alone, but no one has the right to take what belongs to the state. The day when the presidential elections are scheduled, I may not be a candidate, and I’m prepared for that. So far, I have not asked for support from anyone or any political party for my second term,” Embaló declared, underscoring his commitment to the state rather than personal or political interests.
The President also called on the newly appointed government members, particularly the younger ones, to avoid acquiring harmful habits that could be detrimental in the long run. He emphasized that his role as president is to serve the people and that he will not allow himself to be manipulated by anyone.
Embaló highlighted the importance of the Ministries of Freedom and Communication, urging the new Minister of Social Communication, Florentino Fernando Dias, to ensure that all radio stations operate legally and fulfill their financial obligations. He stressed that the role of the Minister is not to shut down stations but to ensure they comply with the law.
Additionally, the President tasked the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, Maria da Conceição Évora, with the successful organization of the centenary celebrations of Amilcar Cabral, a key figure in the nation’s history.
In response to recent accusations from Braima Camará, Leader of MADEM-G15, that Embaló has been interfering in judicial matters, the President refrained from engaging in a public dispute. Instead, he dismissed the allegations, stating, “If Braima Camará had the political capital he claims, MADEM-G15 would have won the legislative elections on June 4th.”
This address followed a recent government reshuffle announced by presidential decree, with new appointments including Aristides Ocante da Silva as Minister of Territorial Administration and Local Government, Dionísio Cabi as Minister of Defense, and José Carlos Varela Casimiro as Minister of Energy, among others.
President Embaló concluded by reiterating his commitment to the nation and the principles of good governance, reminding all government members of their duty to uphold the dignity and integrity of the state.
