Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Ghana’s re-elected President John Dramani Mahama chose The Gambia as the first destination for his one-day working visit following his victory in December 2024. During his trip, President Mahama and Gambian President Adama Barrow held a private meeting at the State House in Banjul, where they reaffirmed their commitment to fostering stronger bilateral relations and regional cooperation.
The two leaders expressed mutual satisfaction with the existing friendly relations between their nations and pledged to enhance efforts to facilitate the free movement of goods. Highlighting the shared priorities of economic growth and integration, the presidents underscored the importance of strengthening trade links to benefit citizens of both countries.
Discussions also focused on The Gambia’s ongoing efforts to address the legacies of the past through its Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC). President Mahama commended The Gambia for its commitment to justice and reconciliation, emphasizing Ghana’s support for the process. He noted Ghana’s role in consolidating democracy in The Gambia and stressed the need to ensure justice for victims of the former regime while securing necessary funds for reparations.
The issue of peace and security in the West African subregion was another central topic, particularly the role of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG). Both leaders acknowledged the mission’s importance in maintaining stability, with President Mahama urging President Barrow to retain Ghanaian troops within the mission to sustain a secure environment.
President Mahama’s visit underscores the strategic partnership between The Gambia and Ghana and sets a tone of mutual cooperation as both countries navigate shared challenges and opportunities.
