In the heart of The Gambia, a beacon of hope and empowerment once stood tall, championing the rights of women and girls with unwavering courage and determination. Satang Jobarteh, a charismatic and inspirational leader, devoted her life to defending the causes of Gambian women, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of activists.

In the small town of Jangjangburreh, where she was well-liked for her candor, kindness, and outspokenness, Satang set out on her quest. She stood out as a young beauty destined for greatness because of these attributes, as well as her natural interest in peace and compassion for people. Her formative years prepared her for a life devoted to fighting gender inequality and inspiring others.

Her work at Save the Children and the Gambia National Archives, where she demonstrated commitment and diligence, brought her early notoriety. Her establishment of the SIMMA Vocation Training Institute in 1991, however, was what really brought her raw abilities, determination, and self-control to light. By giving women access to resources for self-reliance, information, and skills, SIMMA aims to improve their economic and social possibilities.

SIMMA functioned in five subject areas under Satang’s direction: public relations and marketing, advocacy and counseling, sensitization and awareness-raising, education and skills training, and capacity building. The institute had a significant impact since it supported the ratification of the Matrimonial Bill and offered counseling services to victims of forced marriage, early marriage, domestic abuse, and divorce.

In a patriarchal society, Satang’s voice was an omnipotent scream that fought against gender inequality, offered consolation to the downtrodden, and promoted peaceful coexistence. As she took part in multiple conferences and seminars addressing gender inequality and advancing women’s rights, her message found resonance not just in The Gambia but also around the world.

Despite all of her accomplishments, Satang maintained her modesty and altruism, owning nothing of value. She sacrificed everything, right up until the moment of her death, to make many others happy and smile. Her influence is still felt in SIMMA’s work, which focuses on promoting gender equality and addressing the issues that affect women.

Her tireless efforts in promoting gender equality and advocating for women’s rights have left an indelible mark on the community. Satang’s legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched and the movements she helped ignite. Her passion for justice and equality serves as a guiding light for those who continue to fight for a more just and equitable world.

Even though Satang Jobarteh passed away on that devoted day of February 24th 2003, her soul continues to shine and serve as a constant reminder that heroes never truly die—they always live on in our hearts. Her life is an example of how one person can make a difference and encourage others to take up the cause of a more equitable and just society. She dedicated her entire life to advancing women’s liberation on all fronts. Throughout her life, Satang made a major impact on the effort to improve women’s standing.
