In a successful rescue operation led by the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Gambia Navy, all passengers aboard the Kanilai Ferry have been safely evacuated. Currently, only vehicles and motorcycles remain on board the ferry. Marine engineers are working tirelessly to navigate the ferry to Banjul.
Rescue teams are now awaiting high tides to facilitate the safe removal of the ferry.
The Gambia Ferry Services initially negotiated to get the tugboat Sino Majilac Jalbak dispatched to assist with the rescue operation. Meanwhile, a team of experts has been sent to repair the ferry’s engine to expedite its return to operational status.
The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) with support of The Gambia Navy, continue to carry on the response to the distress call from the Kanilai ferry, which experienced an unexpected engine shutdown while at sea.
We continue to monitor the situation closely until the safe resolution of the incident.
