Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – A retired Gambian diplomat and prolific author, Hassan Gibril, has raised concern over what he describes as the misuse of the title “Lord Mayor” across the country’s municipal governance system, urging authorities and the public to respect the historical and cultural context of titles.

In a recent reflection from his chronicle titled Old Man Musing, Mr. Gibril observed that every mayor in The Gambia is casually referred to as “Lord Mayor,” a practice he believes undermines the true significance of the title.

The widespread use of the title ‘Lord Mayor’ without distinction or recognition of its significance can dilute its meaning and importance,” he warned.

Tracing the origins of the title, the seasoned diplomat explained that “Lord Mayor” is a medieval English honorific reserved for mayors of historically significant cities such as London, York, and Liverpool.

Unlike ordinary mayors who administer the day-to-day affairs of municipalities, Lord Mayors are recognized for their exceptional service, ceremonial role, and contributions to their communities.

The key distinction between Mayor and Lord Mayor lies in the level of recognition, dignity, and ceremonial significance associated with the title,” Mr. Gibril noted.

He cautioned that the Gambian practice not only creates confusion but also reflects inconsistencies in municipal governance.

To address this, he recommended establishing clear guidelines on the use of official titles, ensuring consistency across municipalities, and respecting the traditions from which such titles originate.

Mr. Gibril further stressed the importance of educating younger generations about the proper use of nomenclature, noting that titles should convey dignity, respect, and authority.

This write-up is an attempt to bring clarity and understanding to the distinction between Mayor and Lord Mayor, in the hope of stopping the wrong appellation and misnomer that has become prevalent in The Gambia,” he wrote.

He concluded with an appeal for accuracy and respect in the country’s civic culture: “By educating our children about the proper use of titles, we can promote a more informed and respectful society.
