After a brief interruption, Semlex has resumed operations on Tuesday. The company has ceased operations last week in order to extend its contract with the government of The Gambia. There is however no indication as to what are the new terms or which formal guarantees were offered to Semlex for the company to resume operations.
Inspector Muhammed Bah, the GID’s deputy spokesperson, told The Standard Newspaper that Semlex has begun producing national identity cards, residence permits (Ecowas and non-Ecowas), non-Gambian ID cards (Senegalese nationals), and alien cards (non-Ecowas primarily for Europeans, Asians, and Americans) on Tuesday.
The Immigration Police offcial clarified that the contract did not apply to passports but only to national identity cards, residential permits, non-Gambian ID cards, immigrant cards, and driver’s licenses. Inspector Bah stated that GID continued to issue passports after Semlex’s prior contract expired.
