Senegal: 7TV Director and RFM Editor Released After Arrests Linked to Interview With Madiambal Diagne

Maimouna Babacar

Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – The director of the private television channel 7TV, Maimouna Ndour Faye, was released by the public prosecutor on Wednesday after being brought before the Dakar prosecutor’s office. Her release follows 24 hours in police custody over accusations of undermining state security and the authority of justice.

Faye was arrested on Tuesday evening when gendarmes interrupted her live television program featuring Madiambal Diagne, a journalist currently under an international arrest warrant and believed to be residing in France.

Her arrest sparked concern within Senegal’s media circles, as it coincided with the detention of Babacar Fall, editor-in-chief of RFM radio, who was also questioned after interviewing Diagne earlier that day.

Fall was arrested in his office, handcuffed, and taken to the central police station in Dakar before being released hours later.

Speaking to L’Observateur after his release, Fall said he had “no concerns” during his interrogation, convinced that he had “done nothing wrong.” He added that he and his colleagues “felt no regrets” about the interview and would have done it again “without hesitation” under normal circumstances.

Fall defended his professional integrity, stressing that he “would never conduct an interview where there were any professional lapses.” He emphasized his 25 years of experience as a journalist, asserting that he and his team are “professional and responsible.

The veteran editor also voiced concern about growing pressures on the media, warning that “the press must, more than ever, stand tall.

He added, “The monster is here; in addition to the economic and financial difficulties that press companies are going through, some are trying to muzzle it. But this will not succeed.”

The arrests have reignited debate in Senegal over press freedom and the limits of journalistic responsibility, especially in politically sensitive contexts.
