The Special Cybersecurity Division of the Senegalese national police referred the famous Guinean activist Djibril Agi Sylla to court on Thursday following a complaint by his compatriot Kerfalla Camara KPC, a well-known businessman. Agi Sylla is facing a new case concerning his illegal stay in Senegal.
Agi Sylla, who was under an arrest warrant, will be tried this Friday at the Dakar high court. The Guinean influencer risks being extradited if he does not have the necessary papers.
In light of these developments, Me Amadou Aly Kane, the lawyer and human rights defender representing Agi Sylla, has contracted the media to alert the Senegalese authorities about the risks in the event of Agi Sylla’s expulsion to Guinea.
Lawyer Kane drew attention to the potential repercussions of expelling Agi Sylla, who has been critical of the Guinean authorities. He referenced a similar case in 2012 when Chadian blogger and RADDHO activist Makaila Nguebla was expelled to Guinea after pressure from the late President Idriss Deby, despite Nguebla’s support for President Macky Sall at the time.
The complaint against Agi Sylla was initially filed by Guinean businessman KPC for defamation and public insult. However, the Senegalese prosecutor’s office appears to have expanded the investigation to include Agi Sylla’s conditions of entry and stay in Senegal.
Agi Sylla’s situation has raised concerns about his safety if he is deported to Guinea, where his well-being may be at risk. The outcome of his trial and potential extradition will be closely watched by human rights advocates and the international community.
