The Senegalese Constitutional Council has approved a provisional list of 21 candidates for the presidential election on February 25, 2024, with their admissibility set for January 20, 2024.
The juges ruled on appeals by Thierno Alassane Sall and Amadou Ba, finding both inadmissible. However, Mamadou Badio Camara and Cie rejected Karim Wade’s dual citizenship application.
Wade’s son, who was binational at the time of his campaign, lost his French citizenship due to an order from the French Prime Minister, according to the Constitutional Court. Wade’s candidacy, according to the council, is inadmissible since Article 23-4 of the French Civil Code does not apply retroactively.
Validated are the candidacies of Diomaye Faye and Cheikh Tidiane Dieye.
The constitutional judges deemed the appeals filed by Benno Bokk Yakaar’s candidacy and the prime minister unjustified, citing four infractions: membership in a dissolved political entity, fabrication of coins in front of the Constitutional Council, improper coalition formation, and non-membership of the party or coalitions that invested in them.
The Council denied appeals to the recall of 72 candidates, thereby confirming the decision made by the sponsorship control committee, consisting of representatives from the Electoral Commission and other members of the Constitutional Council’s administrative and technical staff. Below is the list of candidates approved by the constitutional council.
