Senegal Navy Enters History With First Successful Anti-Ship Missile Launch

Marine Sénégalaise essai de tir de missile

Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – The Senegalese Navy has entered a new era in its maritime defense capabilities after successfully launching an anti-ship missile from one of its high-seas patrol vessels for the first time. The breakthrough, confirmed this week, represents a major technological leap and significantly boosts Senegal’s naval deterrence in West African waters.

The test launch forms part of the country’s Naval Strategy 2050, a long-term modernization program designed to equip Senegal with a fully operational, modern, and strategically autonomous navy. The missile firing was conducted from a Patrouilleur de Haute Mer (PHM), one of the newest additions to the national fleet.

This success is the result of a clear vision, unwavering commitment, and rigorous preparation,” said Rear Admiral Abdou Sène, Chief of Staff of the Navy. He praised the “technical mastery and professionalism” of the naval crews involved, saying their performance proves Senegalese forces have reached an advanced level of operational competence in a domain traditionally dominated by major maritime powers.

Enhanced Deterrence in Strategic Waters

By operationalizing anti-ship missile capabilities, Senegal strengthens its ability to secure a vast maritime territory of nearly 200,000 km². The zone is rich in fisheries and emerging hydrocarbon resources, making it increasingly vulnerable to illegal fishing, maritime trafficking, piracy, and strategic competition over offshore energy deposits.

The Navy’s enhanced strike capacity is expected to serve as a credible deterrent against such threats while reinforcing national control over strategic sea routes and economic interests.

The milestone comes at a moment of institutional reflection and celebration: the 50th anniversary of the Senegalese National Navy coinciding with the commemoration of Armed Forces Day.

For Rear Admiral Sène, the timing underscores the progress achieved over decades of investment and reform.

This achievement illustrates the maturity of our institution and our commitment to the defense of Senegal’s maritime sovereignty,” he said.

Modern Fleet, Expanded Surveillance Capabilities

Senegal has significantly expanded its naval fleet in recent years, acquiring seven offshore patrol vessels equipped with advanced navigation, surveillance, and weapons systems. These vessels are expected to allow increased patrol presence across Senegal’s Exclusive Economic Zone and improve rapid-response capacity in crisis situations.

With this new strategic capability, Senegal positions itself more firmly as a key maritime security actor in the Gulf of Guinea and the wider West African region.

Guided by its motto, “At sea, for the homeland,” the Senegalese Navy is now charting a new chapter: that of a sovereign, confident, and modern force ready to defend national interests in regional and international waters.
