Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Former government spokesman and prominent member of the Senegalese opposition, Oumar Youm, has issued a blistering rebuke of current government spokesman Moustapha Njekk Sarré, condemning his statements regarding the possible arrest of former President Macky Sall. In a strongly worded response, Youm decried what he described as a “chaotic” and “unworthy” communication strategy by the current administration.
Youm did not mince words in his critique, branding Sarré’s rhetoric as “fanatized and irresponsible,” accusing him of failing to uphold the dignity and impartiality expected from a government spokesperson. According to Youm, the role of the government spokesperson is to deliver the voice of the state with “righteousness, equity, objectivity, restraint, intelligence, and subtlety“—qualities he believes are sorely lacking in Sarré’s public pronouncements.
“This trivial language, carried by a spokesperson for a mediocrity manifesto, is simply pathetic!” Youm declared, in an attack laden with contempt. He went on to lambast the government’s communication approach, asserting that it plunges the country further into “disarray, bitter regret, disillusionment, and fear of the next day.”
Youm further accused the administration of weaponizing state communication to wage a “grotesque and tasteless denigration campaign” against Macky Sall, whom he lauded as an “emeritus statesman” with an “immense talent” that helped elevate Senegal’s standing on the global stage. He contrasted Sall’s leadership with what he described as the incompetence of the current government, which he claims is “stuck and engulfed in immobility, denial, and trial and error.”
The former minister also questioned the administration’s priorities in a country facing pressing socio-economic concerns. “In the current context characterized by a strong anxiety of the populations, legitimate waiting for ‘solutions,’ if you had an ounce of brain, you would spare us your grotesque and insipid comedy and finally put yourself to work!” he charged.
This scathing response comes amid escalating political tensions in Senegal, with members of the opposition voicing concerns over what they see as a growing authoritarian streak in the administration of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. While the government has justified its stance on Macky Sall as a legal matter, critics argue that it is part of a broader strategy to discredit the former leader and his allies.
As political fault lines deepen, Youm’s fierce denunciation signals a hardening of opposition rhetoric against the Faye administration, setting the stage for an increasingly contentious political battle in Senegal.
