Senegal: Political Commentator Mamadou Sy Tounkara Questioned Over Remarks on Anti-Homosexuality Bill

Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Political commentator Mamadou Sy Tounkara was summoned on Tuesday by the Special Division for Cybercrime (DSC) following a heated controversy over his public statements regarding the proposed law criminalizing homosexuality in Senegal.

Tounkara had argued in an analysis aired over the weekend that the bill was “without legal effect,” claiming that the National Assembly had implicitly rejected it by failing to deliberate on it within the timeframe set out in Article 60 of its internal regulations. According to him, the procedural lapse amounted to a “tacit rejection.”

His remarks sparked strong backlash from Amadou Ba, a member of parliament from Pastef, who accused the commentator of spreading “false information” capable of undermining social peace.

The deputy stressed that the extraordinary session of the National Assembly was convened to address four specific government bills, while the proposal on homosexuality remained on the legislative agenda.

Amid mounting public debate, Tounkara was questioned at the DSC but later released. Authorities, however, indicated that he remains at the disposal of the judiciary pending further developments.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to examine the controversial proposal, which continues to fuel tensions in Senegalese political and social discourse.
