Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko on Saturday announced a major cabinet reshuffle, introducing new faces and restructuring portfolios in a move he said was aimed at strengthening governance and meeting citizens’ expectations.

One of the most notable appointments is that of Me Bamba Cissé, a lawyer who previously defended Sonko in his high-profile legal battles, including the Adji Sarr case.

Cissé has been named Minister of the Interior, underscoring the Prime Minister’s reliance on trusted allies with legal expertise for key positions.

At the Ministry of Justice, Ousmane Diagne has been replaced by Yassine Fall, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Integration. Sonko justified the change by stressing his government’s determination to restore confidence in the judiciary.

In the order of protocol, we have placed Justice directly after the Prime Minister. This reflects the importance we attach to this sector, which is a strong demand of the Senegalese people,” Sonko said.

He added that justice reform is also central to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s long-term vision for the country: “We will ensure that Justice reconciles with the Senegalese and regains the confidence of the people.”

In foreign affairs, seasoned career diplomat Cheikh Niang takes over as Minister of Foreign Affairs, moving from his post as Senegal’s permanent representative to the United Nations. Niang’s extensive career includes ambassadorships in Japan, the United States, South Africa, and a stint as consul general in New York.

Political ally Déthié Fall joins the government as Minister of Infrastructure, consolidating the role of Sonko’s close network in the administration.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture has been restructured and merged with the Artisanat and Tourism portfolio.

This new department is entrusted to Pastef deputy Amadou Ba, known for his frequent interventions in parliament and media.

Explaining the reshuffle, Sonko cited two main reasons: the departure of Abass Fall, who resigned after being elected Mayor of Dakar, and the need to adjust government performance after one year in office.

This assessment revealed strengths but also weaknesses in the implementation of public policies. These two factors combined made it necessary to form a new team, symbolizing adaptation and correction to better pursue our reform program,” Sonko said.

The reshuffle marks the most significant government shake-up since Sonko became Prime Minister, consolidating his influence while signaling a renewed focus on justice, infrastructure, and diplomacy.
