Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – The Government of Senegal has announced the upcoming publication of an official list featuring the recognized news media in the country. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, aims to clarify and regulate the nation’s media landscape.
Alioune Sall, the Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, made this significant announcement during the opening ceremony of a day of reflection with media stakeholders on press freedom, whistleblowers, and the safety of journalists. The event highlighted the government’s commitment to transparency in the media sector, a pledge underscored by the Minister’s speech.
“The new government, along with our media partners and technical partners from the United Nations and civil society, will do everything possible to guarantee greater transparency in the governance of the media sector,” stated Minister Sall. This declaration reflects a collaborative effort to foster a transparent and accountable media environment.
The publication of the official list of recognized media outlets is a pivotal step in this direction. The initiative seeks not only to identify officially recognized media entities but also to unveil the true ownership of these press companies. “Publishing the list of media outlets officially recognized by our services, but even more so, knowing the real owners of these press companies ensures that the media are not considered tools of influence or lobbying,” emphasized the Minister.
The forthcoming list is expected to serve as a critical tool in promoting transparency and integrity within Senegal’s media landscape. By making this information public, the government hopes to strengthen the credibility and accountability of media operations across the country.
This move has been widely welcomed by media associations, technical partners, and civil society organizations. It represents a significant stride towards enhancing press freedom and ensuring the safety and independence of journalists in Senegal.
