Gambiaj;com – (BIGNONA, Senegal) – Since October 7, 2024, the Senegalese military has launched an extensive crackdown on hemp cultivation and illegal logging in northern Sindian’s Djibidione, Dieye-Djondji, Massaran, Balla Bassène, and Nialé regions. These areas, situated near the Gambian border, have become hotbeds for hemp cultivation, drawing renewed government attention as trafficking activities have surged to concerning levels.
The military intervention marks a response to long-standing security demands from local communities. The Casamance region, previously embroiled in a decades-long separatist conflict, is witnessing a gradual return of displaced populations. Many of these areas remained sparsely populated due to the conflict, creating conditions that encouraged illicit hemp cultivation. As a result, local farmers lost significant portions of arable land, and the lucrative nature of the trade has drawn numerous young people away from school and toward cannabis farming, contributing to escalating security challenges.
Responding to pleas from residents, the Senegalese army has committed to eradicating hemp fields, dismantling armed groups protecting cannabis farms, and apprehending traffickers. Leading the charge, the commando battalion, supported by the 25th Reconnaissance and Support Battalion, has already reported the destruction of over 50 hectares of hemp crops, with an estimated market value of more than 2 billion CFA francs.
In addition to curbing criminal activities, the army aims to restore agricultural stability and promote lawful economic ventures, with a long-term view of preventing the socio-economic and environmental harm linked to the cannabis trade. The military’s commitment to restoring security and reclaiming land from illicit cultivation aligns with its broader mission to support the region’s sustainable development and protect communities from the ripple effects of the criminal economy.
As the operation progresses, the army has reaffirmed its dedication to helping the Casamance region rebuild and recover from its turbulent past, responding decisively to calls from the population for safer, more resilient communities.
