Gambiaj.com – (KANIFING) – Muhammed Rasul Sowe, a Senegalese national, was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor for sexually assaulting a 61-year-old woman. The sentencing, handed down by Principal Magistrate Isatou Sallah Mbai of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on Monday, followed Sowe’s guilty plea to a charge of rape under the Sexual Offences Act 2013.
The prosecution detailed that on April 9, 2024, at Kololi in The Kanifing Municipality of The Gambia, Sowe forcefully assaulted Fanta Sanyang, the victim, by inserting his finger into her private part without her consent. Sanyang, displaying courage, reported the assault, leading to the legal proceedings.
The court proceedings revealed the appalling nature of the attack, sparking shock and outrage within the community. Sowe’s conviction and sentencing underscored the necessity of holding perpetrators accountable and ensuring justice for survivors of sexual assault.
This case further emphasized the ongoing need to combat sexual violence and safeguard vulnerable individuals in society.
