Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR) – A contingent of 153 Senegalese soldiers, including six women, is set to deploy to Guinea-Bissau on May 18 as part of an ECOWAS mission to support the stabilization of the country. This mission follows the abortive coup d’état against the regime of President Umaro Sissoko Embalo on February 1.
The soldiers will be providing security and logistical support to help restore stability in Guinea-Bissau. The deployment of Senegalese troops is part of ECOWAS’ efforts to prevent further political unrest and ensure the safety of the civilian population. The soldiers will work alongside other regional forces to help strengthen the democratic institutions in Guinea-Bissau and facilitate a peaceful transition of power.
The Senegalese soldiers, under the command of Colonel Mamadou Diagne Ndoye, received the national flag from General Souleymane Kandé, Chief of Staff of the Army.
The Diambars detachment comprises a staff, three motorized sections, and one support section. Their mission includes conducting joint patrols with Guinea-Bissau defense and security forces both within and outside the country to secure civilian populations.
Additionally, the Senegalese soldiers will participate in the protection of the presidential palace, government institutions, and other important points to aid in stabilizing Guinea-Bissau.”
