Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Senegal’s Minister of Justice, Ousmane Diagne, has stated that “nothing is excluded” when it comes to legal proceedings against former President Macky Sall, signaling the possibility of a high-profile prosecution. While high treason has not yet been formally mentioned, investigations into alleged financial misconduct during Sall’s administration are advancing.
Speaking at a government press briefing, Diagne confirmed that the probe is based on findings from the Court of Auditors’ report, which highlights potential criminal offenses, including falsification of documents, digital fraud, public procurement fraud, embezzlement of public funds, money laundering, and illicit enrichment. These alleged infractions implicate various officials, including former ministers, general directors, accountants, and other key figures.
The Audit Office, which is independent of government, on Wednesday pointed to “omissions” in the accounts during Sall’s last term of office between 2019 and 2024, notably on government debt and the budget deficit.
Diagne emphasized that while the findings do not explicitly accuse Sall of high treason, the investigation remains open-ended. “The management of these sectors was entrusted to ministers, directors general, and accountants, among others, but that will be determined by the investigation,” he noted.
Diagne added the probe would “identify those responsible for the irregularities and bring them before the competent criminal court,” he said.
The justice minister assured that due process will be followed, stressing the importance of the presumption of innocence, respect for defense rights, and adherence to criminal procedure. Authorities plan to conduct exhaustive financial investigations to trace illicit funds, identify all involved, and refer them to the appropriate courts, including the High Court of Justice and the Financial Judicial Center.
As scrutiny intensifies over the financial dealings of the former administration, Diagne vowed that the public will be kept informed about the progress of the legal proceedings. The case could have significant political ramifications, particularly as Senegal navigates the post-Sall era under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s leadership.
