Senegal’s National Assembly Lifts MP Farba Ngom’s Immunity Amid Financial Probe

Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – The National Assembly of Senegal voted on Friday to lift the parliamentary immunity of Mouhamadou Ngom, commonly known as Farba Ngom, the deputy for Takku Wallu. The decision, which clears the way for judicial proceedings against the MP, was made with overwhelming support, as 124 of the 130 deputies present voted in favor, while 3 voted against and another 3 abstained.

Farba Ngom is under investigation by the Financial Judicial Unit, and the vote now permits the prosecutor to summon him for questioning in connection with the case. This development marks a significant step in what some observers see as Senegal’s broader effort to address financial accountability among public officials.

The decision, however, was not without controversy. During the debates preceding the vote, Aïssata Tall Sall, representing Farba Ngom, strongly criticized the proceedings, labeling them a “forfeiture.” She argued that the process lacked fairness and transparency.

Echoing these concerns, the president of the Takku Wallu parliamentary group accused the assembly of “rushing” the matter. She described the handling of the file as incomplete and inadequately substantiated, raising questions about the procedural integrity of the decision.

The lifting of parliamentary immunity now places Farba Ngom at the center of an unfolding legal process, with implications for both his political career and Senegal’s political landscape. Observers will closely follow how the judiciary handles the case, given the allegations and the controversy surrounding the parliamentary decision.
