Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – On Friday, Senegal’s National Assembly swiftly passed a bill aimed at reinstating the role of Prime Minister, a position previously abolished by former President Macky Sall. This legislative change is significant as it allows Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to present his general policy statement to the Assembly.
The bill, officially known as No. 10/2024, amends and completes Organic Law No. 2002-20 of May 15, 2002, which governs the internal regulations of the National Assembly. This move reintroduces provisions for the Prime Minister’s role, ensuring that future policy statements can be delivered by the head of government.
The amendment, introduced under an urgent procedure, was spearheaded by prominent figures including Abdou Mbow, President of the Benno Bokk Yaakaar (BBY) parliamentary group, Mohamed Ayib Salim Daffé, President of the Yewwi Askan Wi parliamentary group, and Mamadou Lamine Thiam, President of the Liberté, Démocratie et Changement parliamentary group.
However, the bill faced opposition from deputies Guy Marius Sagna, Babacar Mbaye, and Cheikh Abdou Mbacké, who chose not to vote in favor.
The restoration of the Prime Minister position marks a notable shift in Senegal’s political landscape, reflecting ongoing changes in the country’s governance structure. It also paves the way for the government under Prime minister Ousmane Sonko to clearly outline its policy and strategies to materialize the hopes of the Senegalse people.
