The Serekunda Police Division on Wednesday conducted a significant operation aimed at decongesting and preserving public spaces near the Serekunda Market and parking lots. This operation, a follow-up to the previous “Operation Clear Roads,” was designed to reduce overcrowding and maintain order in the area.
The operation, carried out by members of the Serekunda Task Force, the Police Intervention Unit (PIU), and senior command of Serekunda working together, focused on clearing roads from the Serekunda Market four-road intersection and cleaning up the area around the Serekunda Central Mosque. Comprehensive raids were also conducted at the Serekunda Black Market and Serekunda-Brikama Car Park.
A total of 119 individuals were taken into custody and charged with various crimes as a result of these operations. Each person arrested was screened at the Serekunda Police Station, with the majority being granted bail. However, four individuals did not meet the bail requirements and remain in custody.
The Gambia Police Force emphasized the importance of following rules and regulations to preserve public areas for general use, ensuring public order and the safety of all inhabitants. The operation also included the launch of the second phase of “Operation Clear Public Roads and Highways” in Yundum Market, Coastal Road, and adjacent districts. This phase aims to monitor and enforce regulations, maintain cleared areas, and ensure compliance with legislation regarding the use of public spaces.
Planning for the long-term maintenance of public facilities is crucial following the clearance and enforcement phases of the operation. The overarching goal is to ensure the continued preservation of public spaces for the benefit of all citizens.
The police have announced that surveillance and enforcement will continue in all previously cleared areas as part of their ongoing efforts under “Operation Clear the Roads.”
