Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, the Gambia)- Sergeant Jagne has admitted to cannibalising government vehicles while testifying before the committee investigating transitional security operations at the MSA. The disclosure comes amid scrutiny over the handling of state property during the period surrounding the incoming government.

Jagne explained that his actions were aimed at protecting vehicles from misuse by civilians and former soldiers, who he said were seizing government assets without proper authority. The Sergeant claimed that with active personnel largely absent, he took it upon himself to intervene and secure the vehicles.

The vehicles he took custody of were later handed over to senior personnel, including Turo Jawneh, despite Turo not being an active member of the Gambia Armed Forces at the time. Jagne maintained that his intervention was purely professional, motivated by duty, and not for personal gain.

The committee expressed difficulty reconciling Jagne’s self-appointed authority with formal chain-of-command rules, noting that his candid admission raises questions about oversight, accountability, and the management of government assets during transitional periods.

One could flag the revelation as a concerning precedent, highlighting potential gaps in supervision and accountability within state institutions during periods of political transition.
