The Anti-Crime Unit’s prosecution has advanced the case against seven individuals accused of assaulting police officers while in the line of duty. The suspects whose names have not been disclosed in the police public statement were apprehended at Mariama Kunda for allegedly throwing stones at ACU officers during a rescue mission at the Alkalo’s compound.
The accused individuals are facing three charges including conduct prohibition conducive to breach of peace contrary to Public Order Act, assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty, assault causing actual bodily harm.
The police prosecutor has strongly objected to granting bail to the accused individuals, highlighting the crucial role of the police in protecting lives and property. The prosecutor emphasized that attacks and assaults on police officers undermine the safety of citizens in the country. Therefore, the prosecutor urged the court to remand the accused persons in custody.
The court has adjourned the case to April 15, 2024, for ruling and has ordered that the accused individuals be remanded in prison custody. The public is urged to cooperate with and support the national police force instead of resorting to violence or obstructing police operations.
