The Union of Sierra Leoneans in The Gambia (SlENU) has strongly condemned the gruesome murder of a British national allegedly by a Sierra Leonean resident, Augustine Bangura, in The Gambia. In a press release, SlENU expressed shock and disbelief over the incident, emphasizing that such actions do not represent the values of the Sierra Leonean community in The Gambia.
The Union highlighted the long-standing relationship between The Gambia and Sierra Leone, which dates back to the colonial period. This relationship has led to peaceful coexistence, intermarriage, business, education, and other ties between the two countries. Thousands of Sierra Leoneans reside in The Gambia, contributing positively to society as teachers, contractors, medical personnel, and in other capacities.
However, SlENU expressed concern about the proliferation of contraband drugs such as “kush” and tramadol in the sub-region. They noted that vulnerable youths are becoming easy targets for drug dealers, leading to serious health issues, family embarrassment, and negative societal effects.
SlENU emphasized the need for collaboration between Sierra Leonean and Gambian authorities to address the issue. They offered their support in identifying areas where Sierra Leonean youths are at risk and pledged to continue sensitizing them against drug use and other crime-related activities.
The Union stressed that drug addiction and its effects on youths and society are devastating and must not be allowed to take hold in The Gambia. They called for decisive action to combat drug proliferation and ensure a peaceful future for the country’s youth.
