(FREETOWN, Sierra Leone) – President Julius Maada Bio has received the final report from Sierra Leone’s “Tripartite Committee” on Monday, marking the culmination of an extensive collaborative effort aimed at enhancing the nation’s democratic and electoral processes.
The committee, spearheaded by Samura Kamara, leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), and Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh, has compiled a comprehensive study that identifies areas of consensus and proposes reforms to strengthen the country’s democratic framework.
President Bio praised the committee’s cross-party cooperation, acknowledging that while disagreements persisted, the shared commitment to democratic improvement was commendable. “I am committed to deepening our democratic credentials,” he affirmed, expressing his dedication to working with the opposition to address democratic challenges and implement agreed-upon reforms.
The report, which is anticipated to be a focal point of national political discourse in the coming days, reflects the Tripartite Committee’s thorough examination of electoral procedures and methods. The committee comprised representatives from the All People’s Congress (APC), the government of Sierra Leone (SLPP), and moral guarantors.
Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh, in a statement released on Sunday, voiced his satisfaction with the committee’s achievements. He emphasized the committee’s role in reviewing and modernizing electoral systems to ensure future elections uphold the principles of credibility, fairness, and transparency.
The formation of the Tripartite Committee was a direct response to the contentious aftermath of the national elections held on June 24, 2023. As Sierra Leone continues to navigate its democratic journey, the committee’s recommendations are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the country’s political landscape.
