Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Bakau police are actively investigating a case of alleged theft involving “used transformers” stolen from the NAWEC Fajara Booster Station, with the probe revealing suspected collusion among an employee of NAWEC and contracted security personnel.

According to initial findings, multiple transformers were stolen from NAWEC’s Fajara facility over the past several months. During the investigation, police uncovered evidence implicating a NAWEC employee and security guards from Five Star Security, the private firm hired to protect the site, in the suspected theft scheme.

The investigation further revealed that five used transformers were allegedly sold to a scrap metal dealer for a total of D190,000. The proceeds from these transactions appear to have been divided among the conspirators, pointing to a well-coordinated criminal enterprise within the facility.

In connection with the case, six suspects have been arrested, cautioned, and detained by Bakau police. They are currently assisting investigators as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the theft.

The Gambia Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to tackling crimes and corruption that threaten essential infrastructure and services, pledging to ensure accountability in this case.
