Sonko Seeks Turkey’s Support to Ease Senegal’s Financial Strain

Gambiaj.com – (ANKARA, Turkey) – Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has appealed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for greater support as Dakar navigates what he described as a “very delicate” financial situation.

Speaking Thursday during his visit to Turkey, Sonko said his government’s recovery plan, presented last week, aims to provide a financial lifeline to the state’s coffers.

While the plan relies heavily on domestic measures, he stressed that strategic partnerships could accelerate the country’s path out of its fiscal challenges.

I will insistently seek your support during this period. Beyond what we want to achieve internally, we believe that a determined Turkey standing alongside Senegal could help us quickly overcome this somewhat difficult period for our public finances,” Sonko told Erdoğan.

The prime minister urged Ankara to strengthen its backing, particularly in implementing the recovery plan.

Sonko explained that over 90% of the strategy depends on domestic efforts — including increased tax revenue collection and reduced government spending — but noted that other opportunities could attract Turkish private sector investment.

These include the potential recycling of certain port, airport, and highway assets, for which Senegal is seeking partners.

Sonko’s visit comes amid his government’s drive to stabilize public finances while exploring international cooperation to bolster economic resilience.
