The Non-Communicable Disease Control unit, under the Ministry of Health in The Gambia, recently concluded a 4-day workshop at Kaira Konko in Jarra Soma. The workshop aimed to validate the Enforcement Guide of The Gambia Tobacco Control Act, 2016, in collaboration with various stakeholders.
The Enforcement Guide provides comprehensive details on enforcing the Tobacco Control Act. It includes guidelines on inspections, penalties for non-compliance, and reporting procedures. The validation workshop was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Health, the Gambia Police Force, the Department of Immigration, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and civil society organizations.
Supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), the workshop’s key objective was to create a smoke-free environment for all. Representatives from the Ministry of Health, WHO, Justice Defenders The Gambia, Attorney General’s Chambers & Ministry of Justice, the Gambia Police Force, RAID-THE GAMBIA, Narco-mag DLEAG Gambia, Office of the Governor of LRR, and other key stakeholders actively participated in the event.
The collaborative efforts and input from all stakeholders during the workshop have ensured that the enforcement of the Tobacco Control Act will be carried out efficiently and effectively. This initiative is crucial in reducing the prevalence of tobacco use in The Gambia, contributing to a healthier population.
