The Gambia Journal can confirm reports of a suicide at Mile II Central Prison earlier today. The prisoner was found hanging in his cell by prison guards during a routine check. He is said to have used a makeshift rope made from his mosquito net, which was hanging.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death. This tragic incident has raised concerns about the mental health support available to prisoners in Mile II Central Prison.
It is unclear at this time what may have led the prisoner to take his own life, but sources suggest that he may have been struggling with mental health issues. The lack of proper mental health support within the prison system is a serious issue often brought to light by former detainees and human rights organizations.
