Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The 6th edition of the highly anticipated Sukuta Week is in full swing, drawing a vibrant crowd from the local community and beyond. Hosted by the diverse and dynamic Sukuta community, this week-long celebration has become a hallmark event, blending cultural heritage, sports, education, and community development.
The initiative, launched six years ago by the Sukuta Village Development Committee (VDC), aims to foster unity and celebrate the community’s cultural diversity. The week features a range of activities, including soccer tournaments organized by the various Kabilos, a marathon attracting local athletes, and inter-school quiz competitions.
These competitions, which engage nursery, elementary, and Arabic schools, have become a cornerstone of the event, promoting excellence in education and fostering sustainable career aspirations among young participants.
Tala Jobe, a Sukutarian in the U.S. Gambian Diaspora, said this year’s theme, “Empowering Children and Youth,” underscores the focus on nurturing the potential of the younger generation. Educational forums and discussions on critical topics such as health, education, and women’s empowerment are central to the week’s agenda. “The forums also serve as a platform for prominent individuals to inspire young people with their knowledge and experience in fields like entrepreneurship and skills development.”
The community spirit and commitment to youth development were highlighted by several speakers during the event. Ahmed Cessay, a prominent community leader, called on young people to take an active role in national development. “We urge youth, including children, to be actively involved in the development of our country,” he said.
Kebba Omar Jaiteh, Chairman of Kombo Yuruwaa Kafo, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of equipping the youth with practical skills. Meanwhile, Buba Cham, Chairman of the Sukuta VDC, reaffirmed the committee’s dedication to youth empowerment, announcing plans to establish a youth center in Sukuta.
Governor Ousman Bojang of the West Coast Region added a sense of urgency to these efforts. “Our youths are our future, and we must take action now to support their growth and development,” he stated, reinforcing the importance of addressing challenges facing young people.
The celebrations also serve as a moment to honor those who have contributed to the community’s development. Certificates and awards are presented to schools and individuals, recognizing their achievements and encouraging continued excellence.
Babucarr Sighateh, a Sukuta resident and community advocate, expressed gratitude for the support the event has received and encouraged young people to make the most of the opportunities presented during Sukuta Week. “This is a time to come together, learn, and grow,” he said.
As the week unfolds, the people of Sukuta continue to celebrate their shared heritage while creating pathways for a brighter future. With its focus on empowering children and youth, Sukuta Week 2024 promises to leave a lasting impact, inspiring the next generation of leaders to shape a prosperous tomorrow.
