Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – The Taliban Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the participation of its delegation at the 15th session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Banjul, The Gambia. The session, themed “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development,” commenced on Wednesday and has been attended by heads of states and foreign ministers.
The Secretary-General of the OIC highlighted the organization’s ongoing humanitarian engagement and constructive dialogue with the current Afghan authorities.
He urged member countries to persist in their humanitarian efforts for Afghanistan, emphasizing the importance of the Humanitarian Trust Fund managed by the Islamic Development Bank.
The Taliban delegation included officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Their participation was officially invited by the OIC.
The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement said that its spokesman and head of the department of international organizations of the ministry are representing the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) at the OIC summit.
The statement said that in addition to participating in the general session, the delegation will meet with high-ranking officials of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and representatives of its member countries to discuss various issues.
During the two-day session, discussions encompassed various regional issues, including the situation in Gaza, the recognition of the Palestinian state, and conflicts in Yemen, Libya, and Sudan.
The Taliban’s presence and engagement at such a forum indicate a significant shift in international recognition and diplomatic engagement following the group’s takeover of Afghanistan.
