Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Gambian Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday at the State Guest House Jamuna to discuss The Gambia’s ongoing genocide case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The meeting underscored The Gambia’s steadfast commitment to holding Myanmar accountable for the persecution of Rohingya Muslims.
The Gambian Foreign Minister arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday on a three-day visit, when Bangladesh faces an uphill task of handling more than 1.1 million Rohingya sheltered in Cox’s Bazar and Bhashan Char, with new challenges of fresh influx of Rohigya from Myanmar’s Rakhine state where the Arakan Army is fighting the Myanmar military.
During the discussions with Professor Muhammad Yunus, Minister Tangara provided an update on the legal proceedings and reiterated his country’s unwavering dedication to seeking justice. He emphasized that the case remains a priority for The Gambia and that his government is determined to keep global attention on the plight of the Rohingya people.
“The President of The Gambia stands firmly behind this case and is determined to ensure that justice is served. We aim to keep this issue at the forefront of international discussions,” Tangara stated.
Professor Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Laureate and prominent advocate for social justice, expressed deep appreciation for The Gambia’s leadership in the legal battle. He acknowledged the country’s significant role in amplifying the Rohingya cause on the international stage.
“We wholeheartedly support this case and appreciate your leadership in this noble pursuit. Your commitment is a tremendous help to our cause,” Yunus remarked.
Tangara, in turn, commended Yunus for his global influence, noting that his advocacy plays a crucial role in rallying international support for the Rohingya crisis.
“You are a widely respected figure in Gambia. Your global presence ensures that the international community remains engaged in this crucial issue,” the Gambian minister said.
Beyond the ICJ case, the meeting also covered Bangladesh’s ongoing humanitarian efforts for the Rohingya, including the provision of food and medical aid to displaced communities in Rakhine State. Yunus highlighted the need to address the root causes of the crisis to prevent further displacement.
Additionally, both leaders explored avenues for deepening economic ties between Bangladesh and The Gambia. Yunus expressed Bangladesh’s willingness to support The Gambia’s development initiatives, including potential collaborations in trade and investment.
The meeting also marked the signing of a new agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation in United Nations peacekeeping missions. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to global peace and security through joint efforts in international operations.
Further discussions touched on the potential application of microcredit programs in Africa, with an emphasis on using financial inclusion to reduce poverty and promote stability in conflict-prone regions.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman, High Representative for Rohingya Affairs, and Lamiya Morshed, Senior Secretary for SDG Affairs, were also present at the meeting, reinforcing Bangladesh’s continued commitment to addressing humanitarian challenges.
