Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Banjul Magistrate Court has ordered the transfer of the murder case against Ebou Secka, the suspect accused of killing Wellingara taxi driver Ebrima Ceesay, to the Special Criminal Court.
Ebou Secka, the prime suspect in the alleged murder of Ebrima Ceesay, was re-arrested following a months-long manhunt. Secka, who escaped from police custody in December 2024, was apprehended in Senegal through coordinated efforts between Gambian and Senegalese law enforcement agencies.
The Police, in a statement, said it has arraigned Secka before Principal Magistrate Krubally, where he was charged with murder, contrary to Section 187 of the Criminal Code. The prosecution alleges that in July 2024, Secka unlawfully caused the death of Ebrima Ceesay with malice aforethought.
Representing the Inspector General of Police, Deputy Commissioner M. Jarju led the prosecution team, which included Commission Sanneh, Cpl 7048 A.Y Bojang, and Inspector Saidykhan. Before the charge sheet was read, Deputy Commissioner Jarju applied for the case to be transferred to the Special Criminal Court, citing Section 62 of the Criminal Procedure Code and Legal Notice Number 3 of 2009, which mandates that murder cases and other capital offences be tried in a Special Criminal Court.
Additionally, Deputy Commissioner Jarju sought an order under Section 208A of the Criminal Procedure Code for the accused to be remanded at Mile 2 Central Prison pending his trial at the Special Criminal Court of the High Court.
Principal Magistrate Krubally granted both applications, acknowledging the legal provisions governing murder cases.
With the case now under the jurisdiction of the Special Criminal Court, Ebou Secka will await further proceedings at the High Court.
